Blog Post - Habits & What We Get Used To

So, talking about cold water swimming yesterday got me thinking about habit forming, & the things we end up getting used to.


I have got used to a lot of things in my life –going to yoga more days that not, miserable jobs, drinking water instead of juice, bad relationships, walking instead of taking the bus….

The things we get used to are the things we do most often, they edge their way into our lives the way the water edges in at the beach. One minute you can walk for miles collecting shells, the next minute you’re on one inch of foreshore not quite sure when the tide actually changed.


So how can we make shifts in the directions we want? I think there are two super easy things we can employ to help us build more enjoyable habits:


1. Lower the bar. Start small with new habits. If you want to start walking more, add 5 mins in & make it as enjoyable as possible. Walk with a coffee, or to your favourite song, or along a beautiful route. You’ll start with 5minutes & who knows where it will end up; every brick can build a castle.

2. Shake things up. Do something different as often as you can. This can be as small as walking on the opposite side of the road (trust me it looks different). This helps you shift your perspective which is really important if you want to break out of bad habits & start creating better ones.


These two things are important as opening your perspective & lowering the bar actually gets you to do whatever you are working on. And that is the real key. Doing it again, and again and again until the tide is up.


Let yourself get used to it. Do the things you know are good for you even if you don’t feel like it. Do it even though your mind is telling you not to. Do it even though you can’t be bothered. Do it even though you don’t notice the changes. Just do it. And then do it again. And this is where the magic happens, where you change direction & shift course!

So, we need to make a concerted effort to ensure the things we get used to are beneficial to us. I challenge you to try it. Find something that you know is good for you & commit to it, even if it is only for 5 minutes & then do it. Pick something that will serve you, make it easy to achieve & watch how many castles you start to build from your bricks.
